How Does Your New Year Planning Work?

As the year winds down, it’s natural to start looking ahead to the next 12 months. But when setting business goals for a new year, vague intentions rarely produce reliable results.

The simplest way to create strategic, achievable goals is to base them on your past performance. After all, analyzing the specific actions that generated your wins is the best way to recreate the same success moving forward.

Whether your pipeline flows from past-client check-ins, discovery calls, formal presentations, or referral outreach, tracking the direct relationship between daily activities and closed business can give you a clear, repeatable formula for the year ahead.

Here are three steps to build an activity-based plan for 2027:

1. Ask Yourself: What Actually Moved the Needle?

Business strategist Richard Koch built an entire methodology around a simple reality: roughly 80% of our meaningful results stem from just 20% of our efforts.[1] Look back at your wins over the past year and trace each closed opportunity back to its origin. Did your greatest successes come from repeat clients, sphere-of-influence referrals, industry networking, or inbound marketing? Identifying that high-yield 20% allows you to double down on what works and strategically eliminate the efforts that drain time without producing revenue.

2. Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t control shifting interest rates, macroeconomic headlines, or sudden market turns, but you can control your daily calendar. Translate your 2027 production target into tangible weekly and monthly inputs, like how many past clients you’ll contact or how many new prospects you plan to engage. Committing to a consistent volume of target activities is one of the most reliable ways to achieve the goals you set for yourself.

3. Plan Together With Your Business Partners

A solid business plan doesn't happen in a vacuum. The partners you rely on, from financing specialists and operational resources to marketing collaborators, should understand your goals so they can support your execution. When your key partners understand your revenue targets and ideal customer profiles, they can help you structure deals faster, co-create relevant collateral, and convert qualified leads into signed agreements.

A plan built on your own numbers is easier to trust and much easier to follow during the weeks when motivation runs low. When you replace guesswork with daily discipline, momentum stops being an accident and becomes a predictable system you can count on all year long.
